As to be expected in light of the global economic downturn, the results are down in every category versus the same timeframe for 2008. Please bear in mind that the Kaua‘i real estate market is an insulated one with a relatively small sampling section, therefore a high or low dollar sale, a new condominium project or subdivision can dramatically affect the statistics. Then in 1989, the law was amended to allow ADUs in the Agriculture and Open zones, however, not without controversy. Increasing food production on Kaua‘i has recently been a main focus of community discussion and action, from Mayor Carvalho’s report card to a multitude of local blog sites to ongoing workshops in seed saving, gardening and composting. There is a long list of reasons that supporting local agriculture makes sense — including economic diversification and resilience, health and nutrition, environmental stewardship, and community security. Whether its Business Before Hours or Business After Hours, the Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce provides over 20 networking opportunities through the year for businesses to meet and conduct business. A new benefit was just launched by the Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce which is a video-teleconferencing service now available to Chamber members and its affiliates. This past Friday, the Malama Kaua‘i radio show on KKCR hosted Paul Glover, founder of Ithaca HOURS, one of the most successful local currencies in the country. It was an inspiring and interesting discussion about the economic, social, cultural, and environmental benefits of creating local exchange and investment systems, and what we could do on Kaua‘i. Flood zones are geographic areas that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has defined according to varying levels of flood risk. These zones are depicted on a community’s Flood Insurance Rate Map or Flood Hazard Boundary Map. Each zone reflects the severity or type of flooding in the area. On the morning of April 9, I started receiving e-mails from various colleagues asking me “Have you seen this yet?” There on CNN.com was Kaua‘i’s story of the Westside community coming together to fix the road to Polihale State Park. It was one of those days where our little island was making national news for something that comes naturally to so many here on Kaua‘i. Is no money down too good to be true? Not with a little-known federal home loan program — Rural Housing 502, a.k.a. “the USDA Loan” — that allows homebuyers to purchase property with no money down. This loan is available for specified “rural” areas — and all of Kaua‘i and the Big Island are designated rural. April 26th, 2009 I’m sure everyone reading this has some knowledge of the Federal Government’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, otherwise known as the “Economic Stimulus Package.” There is much interest from our citizens, businesses, government agencies, nonprofit organizations and others on how they are able to receive some of the $789 billion that is being infused into our national, state and local economies.
