LIHU‘E — A trio of Kaua‘i residents were honored this week for their “outstanding environmental achievements,” earning Laulima Awards from Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful, according to a press release.
The awards were presented at KHIB’s annual meeting held at the State Capitol in Honolulu on Monday. Also during the meeting, a Kaua‘i affiliate of the group, itself a subsection of Keep America Beautiful, was one of three new such initiatives to be certified, the release said.
Kaua‘i’s three winners, who were presented their awards by Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr., were Barbara Bennett, Chipper Wichman and Lenny Rapozo.
Bennett, the Community Award winner, has been instrumental in the Kaua‘i Agricultural Initiative and the Mayor’s AlohaGarden. This volunteer organization built and now maintains a community garden at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall.
The garden is overflowing with fresh vegetables and herbs, which are harvested and donated to the Kaua‘i Food Bank and the Salvation Army.
“This beautiful garden is a reminder to all that Kaua‘i is truly the Garden Isle and we can not only grow our own food but can do so to care for others who are in need,” the release said. “We appreciate Barbara’s tireless efforts.”
Wichman, of the National Tropical Botanical Garden, took home the Business Award.
Earlier this year, NTBG completed construction on Kaua‘i’s first LEED certified building. The new Botanical Research Center includes such features as rooftop photovoltaic system, rain catchment and storage systems, clerestory windows, and certified sustainable reclaimed hardwoods that would have otherwise been landfilled. Wichman has been instrumental in these achievements.
Rapozo earned the Government Award for his work on the Wailua Golf Course.
“The facilities improvements under Lenny’s guidance has become a more sustainable and environmentally conscious area,” the release said.
The County’s Parks and Recreation recently began replacing its golf course greens with seashore paspalum. This grass requires less water and no herbicide to maintain. Weeds are controlled by the salt breeze on this ocean front course.
“Our heartfelt thanks go to Lenny and his hard work,” the release said.
