LIHU‘E — Free, fun and Twitter friendly are key words to attracting the now crowd.
A full house filled The Jam Room at Kukui Grove Center as Art Umezu joined Da Jam Girlz — Daphne Sanchez and Juno Apalla — in hosting Open Mic Teen Night No. 1, Friday.
The Jam Room is going to be open every from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Friday courtesy of Jonell Kaohelauli‘i, the marketing director at Kukui Grove, Umezu said.
“She found an empty space where we can host the young people every week through July 31,” he said.
Umezu said sometimes young people need to have somewhere “away” and The Jam Room offers a place young people can come and jam and have fun.
People in high school, college students home for the summer and needing a place to hang, and even parents are welcome.
These people filled the empty retail space next to Radio Shack at the mall, the white paint on the glass entry forcing people to peek inside as they heard the music emanating from within.
Playing during the open mic night, Jon Medeiros, a Waimea High School student, did several renditions on the ‘ukulele that were answered by Kyle Furusho of Kaua‘i High School.
Punctuating the evening, Sanchez and Apalla did their own presentations, and Kaua‘i Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. got a hula accompaniment from Heui Bandman as he belted out an ‘ukulele presentation of his own before heading out to the bon dance at the Waimea Shingon Mission.
“This is a good partnership between Kukui Grove shopping center and Musique International,” Carvalho said. “This is just another place young people can go to have fun and I would love to see this continue beyond July 31.”
Umezu said the hostesses have their individual credentials, Sanchez already being invited back to Japan to perform following her successful tour during spring break.
Apalla, a Kaua‘i High School graduate, is currently enrolled at Pacific University and upon coming home for the summer, was immediately hired for a part in the filming of Super Gator II.
Previously, Apalla was scouted by the “Tropic Thunder” movie and ended up being hired by that movie.
Umezu said some of the future themes for The Jam Room include “Let’s Hula Night,” “Let’s Dance Night,” “’Tween Uke Night,” “Super-beautiful Model Night” and more.
