UPS store holds grand opening

KAPA‘A — More than 75 individuals attended The UPS Store grand-opening celebration last week at the Kaua‘i Village Shopping Center in Kapa‘a.
“They came for pupus and some paniolo music and left with a better understanding of how a new Kapa‘a store could simplify their lives,” owner Megan McCaslin said in an e-mail last week. “And at least one guest left with the knowledge that his favorite island charity would soon be getting a hefty donation.”
Background music was provided by Kanilea, along with pupus from Fish Express and Kintaro. In addition, Pastor Wayne Vidinha gave a traditional Hawaiian blessing to “dispel the past from the store space and usher in the new.”
The North Shore Food Pantry reportedly became the first winner of a monthly drawing that awards one percent of the following month’s gross revenues to a local non-profit.
“Since the store is new, it’s impossible to estimate how much that will be,” McCaslin said. “But, as the word gets out, winning local charities should expect a generous gift.”
The store is slated to be the “one-stop shop for shipping, postal and business services.”
“We look forward to serving the Kauai community,” McCaslin said in a press release. “I think people don’t really know all the things we can do. So we hope to enlighten them. We do much more than just ship and when people realize that, it’s like a light bulb goes on and they come up with all kinds of things they need help with. And we can do most of them; we never say no.”
Other services expected to be offered include black-and-white and color duplications, document finishing, notary, printing services, full-service packaging, freight crating and shipping, mailbox and postal services, as well as office and packaging supplies.
Prior to purchasing The UPS Store, McCaslin was a print and video journalist, having worked for the San Jose Mercury News and People Magazine, as well as producing programs for a local cable channel in Palo Alto, Calif., where she currently lives. She has been a part-time resident of Koloa since 1959 and said she still remembers when the Coco Palms was the only hotel on the island.
Her manager, Shaughnessie Roa, is a native of San Francisco and previously was assistant manager of The UPS Store in Portola Valley, Calif.
The UPS Store location’s hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
