ISD beach clean-up Saturday at Shipwrecks
By David Simon - The Garden Island
PO‘IPU — This Saturday is International Surfing Day, which is an annual worldwide celebration of surfing. The day features special events presented by ocean-minded organizations around the world. It is labeled as a day to give thanks and go surfing, as well as raise awareness of the state of our oceans, waves and beaches and help protect and preserve these recreation areas.
International Surfing Day is always held on June 20 because it is the summer solstice, which is the longest day of summer, for the Northern Hemisphere.
For our island’s participation, Surfrider Kaua‘i is organizing a beach clean-up beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at Shipwrecks Beach (Keoneola Bay). All are welcome to come and help with the effort.
There will be contests and prizes given away for unusual categories of trash picked up, such as ugliest item, smelliest item, plus many others. Participants could walk away with any number of different surf items which have been donated by sponsors, such as t-shirts, flippers or leashes.
All trash bags and gloves will be provided by event organizers.
“This is a time for us to invite the community to join us and learn more about the Surfrider Foundation,” said Barbara Wiedner of Surfrider Kaua‘i, one of the event’s coordinators.
Additionally, food, coffee and other beverages will be provided by the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i for all those in attendance.
Saturday will be the third annual event the organization has held to participate in the worldwide ISD festivities.
Those who wish to join and become members of Surfrider Kaua‘i will have the opportunity to do so at the clean-up for a discounted rate.
