By David Simon - The Garden Island
KALA‘ELOA — O‘ahu’s southwest shore will play host to United States military troops as active U.S. military personnel, retirees and their dependents will hit the waves at White Plains Beach for a weekend of surf competition and camaraderie, according to a press release.
The 2009 HIC/Quiksilver All Military Surf Classic will take place on June 20-21 and is presented by Navy Hawai‘i Morale, Welfare and Recreation. It is the Navy Hawai‘i MWR’s mission to improve the lives of U.S. military personnel and their families.
With last year’s event drawing 180 contestants, which included 97 active-duty personnel, this year’s Classic has been expanded to a two-day event and coordinators are expecting over 220 surfers.
There are 16 divisions for competitors, which include open and active-duty categories for shortboard and longboard surfing. Participants will be battling it out for trophies, prizes and bragging rights. Also started last year was the “Top Branch” award, with the U.S. Navy claiming the inaugural prize.
The event will be organized by Marvin Nuestra and the White Plains lifeguard staff and is sponsored by Hawaiian Island Creations and Quiksilver.
