HANAKAPIA‘I — Kaua‘i Fire Department rescue specialists from Lihu‘e station, aboard Inter-Island Helicopters, successfully removed a visiting San Francisco woman, 27, who injured her ankle Monday morning.
She was airlifted from Hanakapi‘ai Beach midday, after sustaining leg injuries from a fall, according to a county press release.
The woman was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. Her current condition is not known.
According to fire officials, the woman slipped and fell while hiking the Kalalau Trail. The woman’s fiancé, who was with her on the hike, carried her on his back to Hanakapi‘ai Beach.
Friends and bystanders yelled out to a nearby boat from the beach, and the captain of the boat notified the U.S. Coast Guard about the SOS call via VHF radio.
In turn, the Coast Guard contacted Kaua‘i Police Department dispatch about the incident at approximately 10:07 a.m.
Three rescue specialists from the Lihu‘e fire station responded to the call, and headed out in Air-1 at around 11:39 a.m. They are Butch Keahiolalo, Roy Constantino and Kawai Warren.
They landed at Hanakapi‘ai Beach and picked up the woman at around noon. From there, they flew to Princeville Airport, where an American Medical Response ambulance picked her up and transported her to Wilcox Memorial Hospital.

" Dear omg,
Let's get a few things straight.
I was with the "tourist," whose name is Brittney, when despite being an experienced hiker, she slipped on the Kahalau trail about 3/4 of the way to Hanakapi'ai Beach, seriously injuring her ankle. Her fiance and his brothers attempted to carry her toward the beach, while two other members of his family went ahead, knowing we would need to hail a boat to radio in the situation. The trail, as you know, is a challenge, and they were struggling when a visiting firefighter offered to carry her down on his back. Several hours later the indeed awesome KFD arrived to helicopter her out. They thanked us for getting her down to the beach, making their job a bit easier. But clearly all the firefighters involved were the heroes.
We expect that the bill will be high; luckily Britt has good insurance.
All 14 of us have spent the last 8 days in deep appreciation of Kauai's beauty, careful to honor both the land and its people. You, on the other hand, have dishonored yourself by striking out at a great young woman. I can understand your sense of injustice when you experience a rude tourist, but when you attack those of us who respect those generations and their history, we suggest you think before you speak and that you ask yourself who, exactly, you are angry with. "
