Look out for each other

A home repair scam is occurring on Kaua‘i. Senior citizens are the target. The group may start with offers to wash off exterior wall mildew and clean gutters for a cash fee of $500 or more.

Their approach is friendly, and know personal information about the targeted victim such as other family member’s names. They attempt to convince the homeowner that other repairs can be done and they can do it quickly.

The senior is rushed into making decisions as well as giving cash including withdrawals from bank accounts. These are con artists.

Our kupunas are so trusting and often vulnerable due to loneliness or isolation. Neighbors, watch out for each other and strangers in the neighborhood.

Diana Kam, El Cajon, Calif.

Obama’s inflation causing price hikes

It seems we’re starting to feel the beginning of an inflationary cycle and one of your readers is a little perplexed that the prices of everything seem to be going up. (“No more price hikes,” Letters, May 28).

Mr. Rosen is absolutely right, groceries are up, golf, the bus and just about everything else we buy (except real estate) are trending up. So why not just ask our president to pass a law demanding that everyone keep their prices exactly where they are because of this “recession” we’re in? Isn’t that what we should do?

Being a good forward thinking liberal, let’s demand this from our current leaders and make sure we’re protected from all those companies conspiring to “gouge” us because of their greed and selfishness. For more insight on this, I keep asking myself, “What would Jimmy Carter do?”

Other than these horrible companies, what could be the cause of a situation that may just become a runaway period of inflation, or maybe worse, deflation for the first time in 60 years and its accompanying catastrophic unemployment rates.

Let’s see, our president has now shown clearly that his “plan” for overcoming the current financial crisis is to use our taxpayer money to create thousands of jobs and buy up many of the largest companies and banks in the world to save them from themselves.

Wow, that’s intelligent. Let’s call it the “See problem throw money” plan. Then we, through our trustworthy government, can own all the banks and companies so everything will be better! Does it really matter that over the past few months we’ve increased the national debt, heaped more burden on our future generations, and with the president’s Trillion dollar bailout plan, spent more money faster than with any President in history?

Thank goodness our Democratic leaders are discussing a new National Sales Tax on goods and services to help pay for all this, as well as for the president’s “free” health care for everyone pledge. Mr. Rosen, if you think prices are high now you won’t believe what will happen next given our direction.

It was just announced the feds are worried the United States may lose its AAA credit rating because of the president’s remarkable insight, “complex” recovery plan, and money-printing talent.

But who cares, we have the money-printing press at our national mints and can print as much money as we want! Forget about the concept that the more you have of something the less valuable each one becomes.

But that’s OK, we love our president because he has style, and whatever decisions he makes are not his fault. It’s so obvious this is George Bush’s doing anyway. Not to worry! In the end our president will save the day by doing what he does best. Organize the community.

Gordon Oswald, Kapa‘a

Rambo saves the day

This past Saturday, a group of seven of us set out to hike the spectacular (and torturous) Kaapoko Trail through the tunnels to the Hanalei River.

Unfortunately we lost the trail, but found the most generous young man who was in the vicinity pig hunting.

He most graciously abandoned the pig that his dogs had cornered, and in perfect Rambo fashion, grabbed his machete and blazed us back to the trail.

This act of kindness represented the true spirit of aloha and allowed us to complete our journey. Mahalo nui loa to Makani Taniguchi and his trusty sword for a truly phenomenal day! You are our angel!

With love and aloha from your biggest fans.

" Hmmmm, seems to me that the cost of living on Kauai has always been high, long before Obama was in office. Sounds to me like some people have a case of island fever. " My dog ran away, it is all Obama's fault". " I got a flat tire. Obama did it". " I moved to an island in the middle of the ocean where everything costs more, but Obama made me do it ." "

" Mr. Oswald,

George Bush got us inro this mess as you stated in your letter, the bailouts were happening before Obama took office and since he's been in office multi million dollars of bonus money for AIG executives has since been returned with the scruntunity of the Obama admininstation.

Blaming Obama for two wars and the worsrt ecomy in years is ridicul;ous, Obama inherited a mess... Give Obama time, I believe Obama will go down in history as one of the best presidents ever and George Bush jr, will go down as one one of the dumbest and worst presidents our great nation has ever had. " Folks, The GDP to Debt ratio under Regan was 41% at the close of his terms. The GDP to Debt ratio under GW Bush was 41% at the close of his term. The projected GDP to Debt Ratio under Obama is 90%. This means that 90% of this country's production will go to pay the debt that Obama has pushed upon us. Obama's plan is not working, it cannot work, and we will still have to pay for it, even if Mr Rosen gives Obama 100 years spending your self out of debt does not work. "

" Wow gilgamesh, who p*****d in your cheerios? That has got to be one of the best rants I have read in a long time. Didn't your mommy tell you that it is not polite to yell? Who knew that the brightest world leaders live right here on Kauai and they can be found in the opinions section of the TGI? Who knew? "

" gilgamesh.......All I can say is WOW. Why are you shouting? IN THE COMPUTER WORLD, TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS A COMPARISON TO YELLING!! Okay, so we get that some people think George W was the greatest President ever. In my opinion, I totally disagree and that's why I didn't vote for him at all. I still think he was the worst President and not too bright at all either. Unless of course he was just acting like "his lights were on, but nobody was home" so people wouldn't catch on to all the oil money he was raking in; while the American people were paying such ridiculous gas prices...........
As for your 9-11 theory regarding Sadam Hussein trying to repeat the 9-11 episode; that's where G.W. reeled you all in. It was actually proven that Osama Bin Laden was responsible for that attack on the U.S. And gee, I wonder how it is that G.W. supposedly sent so many troops to track him down, but was never able to find him............
I believe President Clinton handed over a large surplus when he left the Presidency and G.W. took over. And eight years later G.W. left the country in such a mess. But don't you fret, G.W. is living the good life on all that Oil Money he made.......
Yes, I don't agree with President Obama handing over billions of dollars to Corporate lolos, but the economy needs a boost to get up and running again.
I've read comments here about people upset that some people have had to resort to welfare & unemployment payments to support their familiies. Well, with more jobs being lost everyday; what do you expect people to do? Aloha! "

" Gordon Oswald is completely right. And "blueblood", you have it backwards: it's the liberals who continue to blame Bush for everything. Meanwhile our Boy President is bankrupting the country with his $3.8 trillion debt. Kinda funny that liberals lambasted Bush when the debt went over ONE trillion. But Barry gets a free pass, even though that level of debt is next to impossible to pay. Thanks, Barry, for bankrupting the future of this country. "

" I am sooooo "sorry" for using capital lettes when hollering about Obama.....What is happening to me and the rest of us conservatives is,,"we are going crazy"!!!!! I am going crazy...No way can the Shias and Sunnis hate each other more than do us conservatives and liberals,,,,well, thats not quite right,,,I love my liberal firends,,,just not their whacked out ideas on what America is all about.....where they are trying to take us,,,where the "gay agenda", abortion "on demand" and the "we are all the same" crap....We are born the same, then our actions, work ethics seperate us...wanna se the liberal agenda on how they want our lives to look....watch these movies...."1984"-big brother,,,,"Zardoz" w/ Sean Connery,,,,,"THX 1138" w/Robert Duvall...and others,,,, "

" I agree with Fran, Bush was too busy following the oil money to see what was happening in other aspects of the economy. He left Obama with a terrible mess. I'm not a fan of the incredible spending, but what really could have been done on such short notice? Could he really just sit back and appoimnt committees to study the banking system, debate the results and then enact legistlation 2+ years later?

Whatever happened to patriotism? A huge majority elected President Obama and he is here to stay for 4 years. I honestly think he is doing the best that he can. Is he perfect? Probably not, hind sight is always 20-20. So instead of name calling and encouraging further political divide, lets support our President while he is in office. One of the main reaosns this country is in such a mess is because politiacaian are NOT always acting on what is best for the country , but instead they want to create a politcally correct (or opposing) record to use as a platform for the next election. If a Republican votes for a Democaratic sponsered bill, he is deemed a traitor and you can guaratee this will be distorted against him at the next election.

Together we stand, divided we fall. "
