Tamil woman shares her culture in India
By Vaidehi Ganesan Herbert – Special to The Garden Island
Mahabalipuram is an ancient Tamil port town which was swallowed by the Bay of Bengal many centuries ago.
However, there is a small beach resort town there today. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are incredible granite structures all over the place — cave temples, temples carved out of single boulders, huge granite wall panels and even a granite light house on a hill. It is a sleepy little town littered with little art shops, restaurants, granite carvers and beach resorts.

She takes a group to ancient Hindu and Jain temples (4th through 12th centuries) in the Thanjavur, Madurai, Courtallam and Cape Comirin areas, old French colony of Pondicherry, old Danish colony of Tranquebar, old Dutch Fort/colony of Sadras, old palaces, tropical rainforests, Cape Comirin, the southern most tip of India, wildlife sanctuaries, silk-weaving towns, mangrove forest and much more.
