Poipu Kai holds charity tennis event

The first of three Poipu Kai charity doubles tennis tournament took place on May 2-3 and turned out to be a great success.
With 50 teams coming out to participate, the competition and charitable spirit was evident. There were entrants who came from the north and west sides of the island, as well as Oahu.
The event benefited the Kaua‘i United Way.
It turned out to be a great spotlight for some local high school players, as three of the six divisions were won by junior players.
In the Men’s A Division, Darron White and Herb Noe beat Brant Fuchigami and Kevin Konishi in the finals.
In the B Division, Harold Shimono Jr. and Daryl Nonaka took the title, besting Jonathan Tom and Clifton Kukino in the finals. Shimono Jr. and Nonaka play for Waimea and made it to
the Round of 16 in the HHSAA tennis tournament last week.
In the Men’s C Division, Sam Dungan and Pat Erwin knocked off Mitch Martello and Dan Miyamoto to take home the title.
In the Women’s A Division, Lyndsey Tom and Sarah Kukino won it all by beating Valerie Rekward and Jennifer Hreljac. Tom, from Kapa‘a, and Kukino, from Kaua‘i, each went on to make it to the quarterfinals in singles at the HHSAA girls tennis tournament.
In the Women’s B Division, Cherine Ito and Makenna McCluskey won the title over Helen Bice and Anne O’Neill. Ito and McCluskey each played for the Kapa‘a varsity tennis team this season.
In the Women’s C Division, Helen Young and Carol Ito defeated Wendy Cooper and Heather Core.
The next Poipu Kai charity men’s and women’s doubles tournament will be held on Aug. 8-9.
