Pierce Murphy, a sophomore at Island School, shattered Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation records in the boys 1500-meter and 3000 runs, at the KIF qualifying track and field meet at Vidinha Stadium Friday.
His 4:20.63 showing in the 1500 beat the old record held by Mario Rosa of Island School, who clocked 4:28.7 in 2004, and Murphy’s 9:42.91 time in the 3000 erased the old record held by Scott Martin of Waimea in 2006, at 10:01.07.
Murphy’s time in the 1500 automatically qualified him for the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state championships next month, but his 3000 time is only a consideration (not automatic-qualifying) time. He also won the 800, in 2:06.62, a state consideration time.
The Kapa‘a High boys team scored a rare team win, behind dual wins from Tyler Cram in the high jump (5-10) and long jump (19-04 1/4), Viliami Masamiai’s wins in both the shot put (41-10) and discus (123-00), and Joseph Velasco’s win in the 300 hurdles (in 42.94, a state consideration time).
The Kapa‘a boys ended with 165.5 points, ahead of Kaua‘i High with 136. The Kaua‘i High girls won the girls team title, with 169 points.
Jayme Jacinto of Waimea High qualified for the state championships with a 16.40 win in the 100 hurdles, and Kathleen Cadiente won two events (200, in 27.35, a state consideration time, and long jump, in 17-00 3/4, an automatic qualifying distance), and helped her 4x100 relay team win another, with an automatic state qualifying time of 51.77 (Kelsey Cadiente, Reanna Javinar and Jessica Iwata make up the rest of that team).
Javinar won the triple jump in 32-08, and Kathleen Cadiente was second, in 32-03 1/4, both consideration distances, and Javinar also captured the 400, in 1:08.51.
Raider Kayla Werner won both the shot put, in 32-06, and the discus, in 87-00, with the shot-put distance a state consideration distance.
Caralyn Broyles of Waimea won the 800, in 2:32.36, a consideration time, Waimea High won the girls 4x400 relay, in 4:22.87, and Kapa‘a was second, in 4:33.26, both consideration times.
Nelson Acosta of Waimea won the 110 hurdles in 16.31, a consideration time, and the Waimea boys 4x100 team won in 45.41, a consideration time. Quinn Gonsalves of Waimea was second in the boys high jump, also at 5-10, a consideration distance, and Torrey Santiago of Waimea won the triple jump, in 41-07 1/2, a consideration distance.
The KIF track and field championships are Thursday (qualifying) and Friday (finals) at Vidinha Stadium, with no admission charged on Thursday.
There will be an admission charge on Friday, league officials said.
