WAILUA — In March, The Friends of Coco Palms committee, sponsored by Kaua’i Public Land Trust, launched a Web site and in order to solicit comments from the Kaua‘i community regarding the Coco Palms property, an online survey was included.

According to a press release, the site has already received 1,374 unique visitors and 3,800 page loads. Visitors include Kaua‘i residents as well as people from Japan, Australia, Germany and Canada.

“We are delighted that the Web site has been visited by so many people,” said Committee Chair Pat Griffin in a written statement, “and even happier with the suggestions and survey responses we have received.”

The release goes on to say that 93 percent of survey respondents said they would support purchasing the property for community benefit. 76.7 percent responded that they would not like to see condos or hotels built on the property and 77.5 percent do not favor a three-year extension granted to the current property owner.

“I strongly support the purchase of this property for community benefit,” said one respondent who commented on the Web site. “We do not need another resort in this area of Wailua. Even now traffic is often at a standstill, and this would only get worse. And with the current recession, it is unlikely that another condo or hotel would be successful.”

The survey is available through the end of May and the committee encourages anyone interested in voicing their opinion about the Coco Palms property to log on to www.friendsofcocopalms.org

The Friends of Coco Palms is led by an executive committee comprised of Pat Griffin, Diane Zachary and state Sen. Gary Hooser. Additional members include: Gary and Beryl Blaich, Andy Bushnell, Bill Chase, Robin Danner, Puna Dawson, Christobel Kealoha, Linda Pizzitola and Rayne Regush.

The Friends of Coco Palms is an ad-hoc steering committee sponsored by the Kaua‘i Public Land Trust.
