Zontians grant $9,000 in scholarships to high schoolers

PUHI — Eight graduating high school seniors were presented scholarships by the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i during a recent scholarship luncheon at the Regency at Pua Kea.
The seniors from Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i and Waimea high schools have a wide range of plans for their futures that will be helped by the $1,000 scholarship each student received.
Additionally, Daisy Liberato, a junior at Kaua‘i High School, was presented the Young Woman in Public Affairs Award for her involvement in the community. She also received a $1,000 scholarship.
Liberato is a member of several Kaua‘i High School clubs that provide community service.
Other recipients include Kayla Brun, Danielle Coloma, Tiffany DeSilva, Jori-Anne Jasper, Christian Kaholokula, Kirsten McCracken, De’lissa Ralacion and Megan Souza.
MaBel Fujiuchi of the Zonta Club said each student had to submit an application and during the process of receiving their awards had to face a panel of judges and answer impromptu questions with reasons for their answers.
Responses to those questions demonstrated the diversity of the scholarship recipients and the ambitious futures they are carving out for themselves.
Proceeds for the scholarships come from a premier event hosted by the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i, Eat Dessert First, which this year is being hosted at the Aston Kaua‘i Beach at Maka‘iwa for the first time.
The Zonta Club of Kaua‘i is a member of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization of executives in business and the professions working together to improve the status of women.
There are some 34,000 members in more than 1,200 clubs in 71 countries.
Founded in 1919 in Buffalo, N.Y., Zonta takes its name from a Sioux word meaning “honest and trustworthy.” Zontians volunteer their time, talents, skills and energy to local and international service projects designed to advance the status of women.
Locally, the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i is involved in the Zonta Christmas Fund and numerous other service projects throughout the year.
