Island School sophomore Pierce Murphy, in California to visit his dying grandmother, was invited to participate in an invitational track meet because of his local times in the 1500-meter run.
After he bested some of the best division 2 runners in Southern California in the 1600M event, placing in the top 10 among all runners in the event, they may not invite him back.
Murphy ran a 4:29.52 in the 1600 at the 2009 Mt. Carmel Invitational Track Meet, where he finished in the top 10 against runners from around 50 California, Arizona and Nevada schools.
His time was best among the D-2 runners, according to his family and friends. Official results were taken from the event’s Web site.
Even if that converts to a 1500M time of 4:13, as Kaua‘i High School track coach Richard Matsumoto says it might, that would be well below current Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association standards to qualify for the state meet, and one of the state’s best times this year as well.
The winning time in the 1600 at the Mt. Carmel Invitational was 4:20.47
Meet organizers who gave Murphy the OK to participate told his father Shawn Murphy they didn’t think Pierce Murphy would do very well against the elite high school field, but he surprised them, ran a smart race, staying with the pack on the first lap, moving into third place in the second lap, staying behind the leader on the third lap, then swinging to the outside and passing the race leader with a half a lap to go, Shawn Murphy said.
“I think this little 10th grader from Kaua‘i’s Island School surprised everyone in the race and in the stands,” Shawn Murphy said via e-mail.
