HANAPEPE — Amy Lauren Shatto has been working hard trying to get things ready for Friday.
Shatto took over the art gallery carrying her name and is the home to the “Orchid Fantasy” art exhibit that is part of the two-day Orchid Festival that opened Friday afternoon.
“It was really hard work getting everything ready for the show,” Shatto, who also coordinates the 4-H Commanchero horse club, said. “But it’s here, now and after this, I’ll have more time to think about the horses.”
At the heart of the festival is the Garden Island Orchid Society’s annual Spring Fantasy show and sale located inside the Hanapepe United Church of Christ.
The GIOS exhibit gave birth to the now-expanded offering that overflows into old Hanapepe town and its roster of art galleries and eateries.
“We had a lot of different people entering this year,” said one of the American Orchid Society certified judges who flew in from Honolulu for the event. “There are a lot of nice specimens this year, but it was nice to see so many new people submitting entries.”
Amy and Al Sugano earned one of two AOS Cultural Merit awards with their ludisia discolor “Jewel Crown.” A phalaenopsis, “DTPS. Neifert’s Flower Crown” earned the second AOS Cultural Merit award, and a dendrobium, “Den. Cole Neifert” was presented an AOS Award of Merit.
These were only three of the numerous award winners at the show where GIOS members have put together a wide variety of home-made baked goods and a plate lunch selection for viewers to enjoy in a tented area outside the church.
Kathy Kovala, a watercolorist who has been here since February, had a variety of watercolor pieces based on previous Spring Fantasy shows.
A concert by Makana highlights Saturday’s offerings at the Orchid Festival that is supported by Jimmy Nishida Farms, A-Vac, Aqua Engineers, The Professionals and Selfe Service Records.
