Raiders split with Waimea

NAWILIWILI — Host Kaua‘i High School split its Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation tennis match against Waimea, Saturday.
The Raiders’ No. 1 Girls singles player, Sarah Kukino, handily took her match against Dessa Rentrop, 6-0, 6-0, but Waimea picked up the remainder of the matches, finishing the day winning the girls matches, 4-1.
On the boys’ courts, Waimea’s Darrel Nonaka bested Matthew Kanna in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, but Kaua‘i went on to take all the other matches, one by default, in its 4-1 win over the Menehune.
Kaua‘i’s Ryan Bieker outlasted a hard-hitting Harold Shimono in the No. 1 Boys Singles match, 6-4, 7-6 (1) and the Kaua‘i No. 1 Boys Doubles team of Chris Flynn and Lanning Henriques got past Waimea’s duo of Michael Haack and Joshua Ponting, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
Peter Nguyen and Lance Matsumoto played for the reds on the No. 2 Boys Doubles court against Kevin Toma and Bryle Rivera and walked off with a win, 6-1, 6-2 while Michael Fujikawa and Nick Bieker won its No. 3 Boys Doubles by default over Waimea’s Ty Shitanaka and Chris Ajimura.
Rachel Wright of Waimea outlasted Kaua‘i’s Shay Orial on the Girls No. 2 Singles court, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Waimea’s Tiffany Lum and Jade Cano had coach Paulette Lum watching their match with interest on the Girls No. 1 Doubles court.
But the Menehune duo had no problem over Jasmine Ikeda and Waters Riley, 6-1, 6-2.
On the Girls No. 3 Doubles court, Waimea’s team of Rachel Umetsu and Anna Hartsell took Raisa Carlos and Jamie Gali in three sets, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Ikeda came back to team with Lisa Chang and downed the Menehune team of Rentrop and Miriam Corpuz, 8-6 in a girls exhibition match.
Kaua‘i’s duo of Daisy and Crystal Liberato teamed to edge out Waimea’s Chantelle Carveiro and Averie Soto, 8-2 in another girls’ doubles exhibition.
Kapa‘a will host Kaua‘i at the Kapa‘a tennis courts starting at 10 a.m., Saturday while Island School hosts Waimea at the KCC courts starting at noon.
