By Dennis Fujimoto - The Garden Island
Matt Kaleiohi, working a .524 light, slipped through the quarter mile on an 11.10 run on a 10.9 dial-in to take the Bike Class at the Mana Raceway Park, Saturday.
Weather threatened to cancel the event out on the normally dry Westside, but at 2 p.m., Garden Island Racing Association officials agreed that the races could be held safely and gave the green light.
Kaleiohi topped 108.96 mph on his ‘89 Suzuki and was challenged by Tony Ricci atop a ‘05 Harley Davidson sponsored by the Sons of Hawai‘i Motorcycle Club. Ricci left on a .545 light for a 12.92 run (12.48 dial-in) topping 101.58 mph for the runner-up berth in the class.
Kainoa Raposas, in a ‘94 Mustang sponsored by MnM Kustoms, Paul Silva, Rudy and Fran Ramos and Western Motors locked up the Street Class after challenger Valerie Kauo-Hayes, driving a ‘05 Chrysler 300 sponsored by Keapana Garage Doors, red lighted.

Sanekane’s winning run left on a .621 light, running 12.59 (12.57 dial-in) and reaching 106.13 mph.
Following three red light wins, Marc Perales in a ‘67 Camaro sponsored by Destination Auto Works, earned his top slot in the Pro ET class by edging out Chris Loew’s ‘69 Chevelle sponsored by Speedie Lube and Suzuki Kaua‘i.
Perales left on a .599 light on a 10.59 run (10.37 dial-in) reaching 112.78 mph to Loew’s run that left on a .597 light reaching speeds of 111.11 mph on an 11.675 run (11.09 dial-in).
Calvin Costa, driving a ‘23 T-Bucket sponsored by D&W Services/RC Fabrication, took the Top Gun class after Bobby Nascimento, driving a 2000 Homebuilt rear-end dragster, red lighted.
Costa’s T-Bucket left on a .662 light for a 9.13 run (8.73 dial-in) reaching 150 mph for the win.
Kyle Groves, driving his Jr. Dragster sponsored by Kaua‘i Building Detailers, Chris Loew and Tony’s Repair, took the Jr. Dragster class by a scant 28 inches over the efforts of Courtney Brock in her dragster sponsored by JB’s Repair, Kealoha Kemos, K&S Auto Machine Works.
