Barca wins heat at Duranbah
By Lanaly Cabalo - The Garden Island
Chris Ward had 25 seconds to catch the last, much-needed wave if he was going to defeat Kaua‘i’s Dustin Barca. But Ward just missed it and Barca won his Round 2 heat of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast held at Duranbah Beach, Australia.
The Association of Surfing Professional’s World Tour rookie beat won with a score of 11.34 to Ward’s 9.50. Ward had a slight edge in the beginning, but Barca was able to pull out a 5.17 to give the lead by .24. Both ran into a little bit of trouble when they went for the same wave two rides in a row. On the first ride, Barca was given priority and received the points, but neither were given points for the second time.
Then Barca came up with his highest score of the heat when he hit two vertical turns and a reversal with five minutes left, and earned himself a more comfortable lead over Ward. Ward was unable to catch up and Barca moves on to the next round.
In the heat prior, Hawai‘i’s Fred Patacchia (15.53) beat out Australia’s Phillip MacDonald (12.73) to also advance in the competition.
Organizers were unable to complete the rest of the round and the four remaining heats — including Roy Powers’ Heat 16 against Australia’s Ben Dunn— will run when the competition resumes.
The women’s Roxy Pro semifinals may remain on standby until the men finish Round 2.
The veteran Melanie Bartels and the rookie Coco Ho are will face off against each other in the semi heat after Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore and New Zealand’s rooke Paige Hareb.
