Barca, Powers advance at Quiksilver Pro
By Lanaly Cabalo - The Garden Island
Kaua‘i’s Dustin Barca and Roy Powers are safely through to Round 2 of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast.
In the first of 10 stops of the Association of Surfing Professionals tour, opening day saw 2- to 3-foot conditions and the completion of all 16 heats.
Barca was the first of the Hawai‘i surfers up, as he was seeded in the first heat. The rookie in his first season on the World Championship Tour, Barca (11.87) finished second to France’s Jeremy Flores (13.67).
Powers was next, in the second heat. He finished in third with a score of 7.27, behind Portugal’s Tiago Pires (12.00) and USA’s Bobby Martinez (12.00).
Kekoa Bacalso was the only Hawai‘i surfer to have won his heat on opening day. The rookie took top honors of the day posting the event’s highest-single wave score of 9.33 to finish with a heat total 17.33. He beat out Australia’s Chris Davidson (15.84) and Kai Otton (9.83).
“(Chris) came out guns blazing,” Bacalso told the ASP in a post-surf interview. “I kept getting the first waves and he would get the second and smoke me on the exchange. I had my back against the fence and knew I had to bring out something special. I thought about Round 2 and did not want to be surfing in it, that’s everyone’s worst nightmare.”
Bacalso directly advances to Round 3.
Fred Pattachia finished second in his heat (13.94) behind France’s Tim Boal (15.84).
Barca will now surf in Heat 7 of Round 2 against USA’s Chris Ward, Powers is in the final heat against Australia’s Ben Dunn. Pattachia will face Australia’s Phillip MacDonald.
Running concurrently with the men’s Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast is the women’s Roxy Gold Coast Pro. That has yet to begin with Round 1 and is on a lay day for Sunday.
