Powers, Barca open ASP season

The seedings are set and Kaua‘i’s Roy Powers and Dustin Barca were placed in the early heats of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast in Australia.
The opening competition for the Association of Surfing Professionals start its holding period starting on Friday.
Powers, whose last win came in 2007 at the Reef Hawaiian Pro, will surf in the opening heat of Round 1 against two Frenchmen: Jeremy Flores and Tim Boal.
Barca, who is in his first year on the World Championship Tour, will surf in the second heat against California’s Bobby Martinez and Australia’s Ben Dunn.
Other Hawai‘i surfers set to compete are Kekoa Bacalso and Fred Pattachia. Both are expected to surf later in the day once the Quiksilver Pro commences.
On the women’s side, Kaua‘i’s Alana Blanchard and Bethany Hamilton will be in Roxy Pro Gold Coast running concurrently with the men’s competition.
