Andy and Bruce Irons may be taking this year off from the professional surfing circuit, but they won’t be taking a break from their hometown.
The Annual Irons Brothers Pine Trees Classic is in its eighth year and this year, it will be held on Feb. 28. All the entry forms hit the surf shops around the island on Monday. Only a 124 kids, aged 12 and under may participate.
One of the new aspects of this year’s meet is a canned food drive. Because the event draws and or feeds up to 500 people in attendance, they are asking that people donate what they can.
“(The contest) is a neat thing the boys provide for the kids,” their father Phil Irons said, adding that giving back to the community was the least the brothers could do. “Economy wise, it would be a good gesture. If you can bring something, great, if not, then, that’s alright.”
Both brothers announced temporary retirements from the Association of Surfing Professionals’ World Championship Tour, however Bruce may accept wildcard entries into a number of this year’s events. Andy has said he will return in 2010.
The WCT is set to start next week with the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, whose holding period starts the same day as the Irons brothers’ classic. The tour will still see two Kauaians on tour: Roy Powers and Dustin Barca.
Andy is a three-time surfing world champion and Bruce was the last surfer to win the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational.
