Island Soap Company celebrates 25th anniversary
Island Soap Company is celebrating making handmade soaps for 25 years!
First founded in 1984 as Kaua‘i Soap Company and handmaking only one kind of coconut fragrance soap, the one-man factory was set up in an old Kekaha sugar plantation building. A few years later the company changed hands and became Island Soap Company. When new owners Marlena and Steve Connella came on board in 1991 they took the reins and slowly built the business up, adding other soaps, lotions, candles, and other tropical themed body care products. After Hurricane Iniki blew off most of the little Kekaha factory roof, the Connellas moved the factory into a new building in Kilauea. Outgrowing that a few years later as the wholesale business grew, in 1998 they moved the “mom and pop” factory to a larger space in Kapa‘a, bringing their loyal employees with them.
In 1997, at the repeated requests of tourists wanting to “visit the soap factory,” they opened their first Island Soap & Candleworks shop in Kilauea Town with new partner Ken Stern, in the courtyard of the Kong Lung Center. The success of the new Kilauea Store inspired a second shop on the boardwalk in Old Koloa Town. The concept was to have a working factory in each shop for customers to come in and see the soaps and candles being made. In addition, each little store factory was a small laboratory, where other new products have since been developed, including a big local favorite, Surfer’s Salve, created by employee Ginger Kinney in the Kilauea Store.
Today, Island Soap & Candleworks shops offer the public a wide selection of soaps and body care products as well as candles and other unique giftable products, many locally made.
In 25 years Island Soap Company has come a long way from that first coconut scented bar of soap.
Visit in March and receive a free bar of their all-natural soap with any purchase.
In addition, every month for the remainder of 2009 there will be a drawing for a $50 gift card, good at any Island Soap & Candleworks shop on Kaua‘i, or at the company mail order website www.islandsoap.com
Island Soap & Candleworks shops are locate in Old Koloa Town, Kilauea Town on the way to the Lighthouse, and in the Princeville shopping Center.
For more information call Ginger at 828-1955 in Kilauea or Deron at 742-1945 in Koloa.
Bubba’s Hawai‘i expands to the South Shore
Residents and visitors to the South Shore of Kaua‘i will find it easier to get their favorite burger when Bubba’s Hawai‘i opens at Kukui‘ula Village at the end of summer. Bubba’s Hawai‘i will join other local favorites, including Quiksilver, Lappert’s Hawai‘i, Kela’s Glass Gallery, Maui Divers, Taro Fields and Palm Palm, at Kukui’ula Village, situated at the entrance to Po‘ipu.
With a reputation for serving the best authentic old-fashioned burgers on Kaua‘i for 19 years, the local owners of this popular and fun burger “joint” selected Kukui‘ula Village because of its prime location as well as the project’s plantation-style design.
Bubba’s Hawai‘i’s approximately 1,500 square foot restaurant at Kukui‘ula Village will be the popular eatery’s third location on Kaua‘i.
Always community minded, many customers remember Bubba’s for setting up a portable grill at Kapa‘a Park the morning after Hurricane Iniki. In the first five hours, they fed nearly 850 people for free.
