Smokers kicking butt habit have help
By Dennis Fujimoto - The Garden Island
With the new year upon us, there are those who have made resolutions to quit smoking.
Behind those resolutions are a group of people committed to help the quitters fulfill their resolutions, and one of the first things the group is doing is distributing a free “Survival (Quit) Kit” next week.
“We’re here if they want us,” said Rebecca Smith, the new director of the Kaua‘i Chapter of the American Lung Association. “If people decide they want to quit, we’re here to help them.”
Members of the Kaua‘i District State Health Office, including former ALA leader Jan Pascua, are among those slated to help distribute the kits on a first-come, first-serve basis from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the area near Starbucks at the Kukui Grove Shopping Center.
Quitting smoking brings on a variety of symptoms, according to the ALA’s “Common Recovery Symptoms.”
To cope with some of the physical and psychological discomfort during the adjustment period, the handout lists some of the more common symptoms and suggestions for coping and relieving the discomfort.
A “Tip Sheet to Non-Smoking,” another ALA handout, provides suggestions and ideas for those who are serious quitters as well as those who simply want to reduce their intake of nicotine.
“Quit Smoking Solutions” is a cheat sheet filled with toll-free telephone numbers as well as local programs and services available for those wanting to kick the cigarette habit, and a “Quit Smoking Action Plan” lays out ways smokers can lay out a personalized plan to not only free oneself from cigarettes, but to stay free.
These handouts are also distributed by the ALA and forms the core of the “Survival (Quit) Kit.”
These are supplemented by a variety of other literature that provides information on secondhand smoke, how to stop smoking for good, and weight control and stopping smoking.
Additional help aids are also available by visiting the ALA, Kaua‘i Chapter, office located on Umi Street, across from Kintaro restaurant.
For more information, call the ALA, Kaua‘i Chapter office at 245-4142, or visit the American Lung Association Web site at www.lungusa.org.
