Man injured in fall at Waikoko’s

HANALEI — A 23-year-old North Shore man was in serious condition yesterday afternoon at Wilcox Memorial Hospital after falling some 30 feet onto rocks near the surf spot known as Waikoko’s on the western end of Hanalei Bay, officials said.

County spokeswoman Mary Daubert said Ian Scholz had climbed up the side of a hill and grabbed onto either a branch or a root that gave way, tumbling 30 feet onto the rocks below and then into the ocean.

She said Scholz’s girlfriend and other surfers went to his aid, moving him out of the area and placing a call to emergency dispatch.

Communications issued over emergency scanner frequencies said Scholz had lost consciousness from the fall, but Daubert could not confirm the details of the injuries.

Personnel from the Hanalei Fire Department arrived on scene within five minutes of the 12:40 p.m. call, Daubert said, responding with Truck 1 and Engine 1. The KFD checked out and then prepped Scholz before paramedics arrived and took him via ambulance to Wilcox.

Hospital spokeswoman Brooke Johnson said just before 3 p.m. that Scholz was in serious condition, but could not comment on his specific injuries.

Daubert, who said Scholz has a Moloa‘a post office box, was unable to find a residence city for him.
