Waimea girls, boys take XC meet

The Waimea girls and boys cross country teams withstood the hot and hilly conditions yesterday to take the meet hosted by Kula School.
Waimea’s Caralyn Broyles (23:00.52) won in the individual standings, coming in nearly a minute before the second-place finisher from Kula, Tiare Welborn (23:52.10). Waimea’s Natasha Abadillo (24:06.90), Kaua‘i High School’s Elizabeth Lamadrid (24:47.50) and Kapa‘a High School’s Alia Weiss (25:39.90) rounded out the top five of 45 runners yesterday.
Overall, Waimea’s girls finished with 21 points, five girls in the top 10 and a running time average of 24:51.46. Kapa‘a’s girls finished with 43 points and Kaua‘i with 66.
Despite Waimea’s boys team finish, Kapa‘a’s Alex Lamadrid finished atop the leaderboard with a time of 19:19.60. Kula’s Brycen Phillips (19:50.20) took second overall but did not earn points. The small North Shore private school does not have a complete team and cannot receive points toward the meet. That meant Christian Tangalin (19:52.40) was Waimea’s highest-place finisher in third, but received the second-place points. Darrel Nonaka (19:53.70) and Daniel Degracia (19:55.10) rounded out the top five.
Like their female counterparts, the Menehune also placed five of their boys in the top 10.
The Menehune finished with 26 points, Kaua‘i 52, Kapa‘a 58, Island School 104.
