Book signing
6 p.m. to 9 p.m., tonight, Talk Story bookstore
Stormy Cozad, a local author and long time resident of Kaua‘i will be available for the signing of her book, “Kaua‘i: Images of America” tonight and tomorrow. Tonight she will be at Talk Story bookstore in Hanapepe and tomorrow from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Borders Books and Music. In researching her book, she was able to explore the vast photographic archives of the Kaua‘i Museum and the Kaua‘i Historical Society for interesting images that reflect Kaua‘i’s history. Her book signing at Kaua‘i Museum is scheduled for Sept. 20.

The Kaua‘i Museum offers a workshop on gourd crafting with author and renowned expert on the Hawaiian gourd, Jim Widess. All materials are provided in this hands-on workshop with a nominal fee of $50. Jim Widess is the owner of the Caning Shop in Berkeley, Calif. Over the years he has authored and co-authored a number of how-to books on subjects from caning, gourd crafting and coconut frond weaving, to ribbon and flower lei. While here he’ll sign his books: “The Complete Book of Hawaiian Gourd Craft,” “How to Make Hawaiian Musical Instruments,” “How to Weave Hawaiian Coconut Palm Fronds, Hawaii’s Floral Leis” and the “Complete Book of Gourd Carving.”For more information call

Kaumakani ball field, tomorrow
Join Kaua‘i’s amateur astronomers for viewing of Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and Mars. The gazing begins at 7 p.m. The archer’s arrow (Sagittarius) will be aimed directly at Antares, the heart of Scorpius. KEASA’s members will help participants locate the stars and constellations of the summer triangle or Navigator’s Triangle. Come early (6:30 p.m.) for a pre-starwatch orientation; an introduction to the sky map, red cellophane and other useful resources. Find directions and a map to Kaumakani at keasa.org or by calling the 332-7827.Bring a light jacket, hat and other warm clothing for chilly nights; a beach or lawn chair, a mat or blanket to sit on and a small flashlight with a red lens or covered with red cellophane. Insect repellent recommended. Dim your headlights when approaching the ball field.
30th annual Labor Day breakfast
7 a.m. to 10 a.m., Lihue United Church parish hall
Church members and friends will serve their now famous buffet of scrambled eggs, sausage, rice, coffee cakes and pastries, fresh fruit, juice and coffee. All proceeds benefit Ke Ala Hoku (community reintegration program for formerly incarcerated citizens) and Hale Opio (temporary home for at-risk teens). Entertainment throughout the morning is planned and each year Labor Day Breakfast offers a casual and relaxed opportunity for community members and visitors to meet and greet as well as enjoy breakfast. Tickets can be purchased in advance from church members or at the door: $5 for ages 12 and older, $3.50 for ages 5 to 11 years old and free for children 4 and younger.
