Dizon will see playing time

The Detroit Lions made five cuts yesterday. Waimea High School Jordon Dizon was not on that list — he was signed to a four-year deal earlier this summer — but there is still one more preseason game to be played before final decisions will be made on the team’s field lineup.

However, things are continuing to look good for the rookie linebacker, and head coach Rod Marinelli said that Dizon will get playing time this year. It’s just a matter of when, how long and for which plays.

“I think that you never want to put anybody in who’s not ready, that doesn’t make sense,” Marinelli said at a post-practice media session. “He’s a guy, that as you develop, you’d like to have two guys where your starter doesn’t have to play every snap. ...That is a critical position, and he’ll play this year.”

Marinelli said Dizon might fit well in the nickel formation.

“Seeing as we have a Nickel Mike, to help (him) to grow in those areas. He’s got great feel, he’s got space awareness. There’s not, at times, as many run fits. That’s where it’s the hardest — regular people shifting, moving. But, we’re just going to keep going with the guy,” he said.

Marinelli also said that he is not surprised with how Dizon is handling his transition to the NFL.

“This guy is going to make the transition very fast. He’s very instinctive,” he said.

The Lions’ final preseason game is tomorrow at Ralph Wilson Stadium against the Buffalo Bills.
