Summer solstice a time to grow healthy

The Summer Solstice Celebration takes place June 21 at the Malama Kaua‘i Sustainability Center in Kilauea.

That was the message extended by Katherine Fisher, co-founder of the Hawai‘i Health Guide, when she accepted a grant from the Young Bros. Community Advisory Board, Thursday.

“Through an arrangement with the Kaua‘i Bus, people going to the solstice event, June 21, can ride The Kaua‘i Bus and not have to worry about driving or parking at the event,” Fisher said.

The grant provided by the YB CAB allows the Hawai‘i Health Guide to expand on its multi-cultural medicinal education program which has been available at all of its previous events.

“You’d be amazed to see how far a little money can go,” Fisher said to Wanda Shibata and Millie Wellington of the YB CAB who made the presentation at the YB Nawiliwili Port offices.

During the upcoming celebration, Fisher said there will be health fair booths, presentations by various representatives from booth vendors, cultural experts, healthy food, cooking demonstrations and other family-oriented events, including a lei contest.

The Garden Island Arts Council will have its Van Go! at the festival so children and youth can participate in this year’s project, “Kahu ‘Ohana,” where they have an opportunity to recognize and honor their mentor, or special person, with a limerick and watercolor painting.

The Summer Solstice Celebration will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be followed by a concert featuring Paula Fuga and friends. That event will run from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Starting Sunday, the Summer Solstice celebration will turn its attention toward workshops and tours with reservations for the various offerings being requested.

According to information on the Hawai‘i Health Guide Web site, additional tours, classes and workshops will be held from June 23 through June 26 at various locations around the island.

One of these will take place on June 25 from 10 a.m. to noon with Chef Johnny of Gaylord’s at Kilohana who will offer a culinary garden tour.

Speakers and presenters will delve into a variety of subject matter ranging from plantoxidents by Dr. Michael Ancharski, Hawaiian noni facts from farmer Steve Frailey, healing arts of the Phillipines with Patria Aguilana, nurse and health instructor, and Virgil Apostle, a certified holistic health practitioner.

Other subjects include Amazon medicine healing from the jungle, La‘au Lapa‘au Kaua‘i with Uala Lenta and kumu Levon Ohai, instructors of la‘au lapa‘au from the University of Hawai‘i, Chinese medicine with Leon Letoto, and healing herbs and techniques of Ayurveda by Darci Frankel, Ayurvedic practitioner and founder of the Ayurvedic Center of Hawai‘i as well as the director of the Hanalei Day Spa.

A full schedule of events for the solstice celebration can be found on the Hawai‘i Health Guide Web site at www.hawaiihealthguide.com or www.HawaiiHealingGarden.com
