Landslide delays North Shore traffic

Several boulders, rocks and other debris broke loose from a North Shore hillside along Kuhio Highway yesterday around 4 p.m. closing one lane of the highway for a time.

“It happened around 4 p.m. and state crews are on their way,” said state Department of Transportation spokeswoman Tammy Mori, shortly before 6 p.m. last night. “There is one boulder about 5 feet in diameter and arriving crews have said they believe they will be able to fully reopen the highway by 7 p.m.”

Kauai Police Department officers were conducting contra flow to allow vehicles to pass over the one lane that was not covered by debris. The small landslide was in the Waikoko area of Hanalei, according to a Kaua�i County press release.

“There were no injuries or damages to any property as a result of this landslide,” Mori said.

The DOT spokeswoman could not immediately say what caused the landslide.
