Bank robbery suspect faces federal charges

Bank robbery suspect Mark Chambers, 50, of Hanalei, has been transferred from Kaua‘i Police Department custody to federal officers and will face federal criminal charges on O‘ahu in coming weeks.
Prosecuting Attorney Craig De Costa informed The Garden Island that Chambers would be turned over to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, which confirmed Tuesday that it had filed a federal criminal complaint against him on Friday.
Chambers is now being held at the Honolulu Federal Detention Center, according to a U.S. Attorney spokesperson, and will have his preliminary hearing on June 16 at 10:30 a.m.
Chambers was arrested on May 27 after hitchhiking to KPD headquarters to turn himself in for robbing the First Hawaiian Bank branch in the Kukui Grove Center on May 24.
Chambers has a pair of bank robbery convictions on his record, one stemming from a 1982 incident in Los Angeles, Calif. and another from a 1997 Kaua‘i robbery that, like the newest charge, was turned over to federal prosecutors.
He pled guilty in the 1997 case and was eventually sentenced to four years, three months in prison and three years of supervised release. According to KPD records, he served his time at the Federal Correctional Institution in Sheridan, Ore., a medium-security facility.
