Bystander saves swimmer
by The Garden Island
A 48-year-old South Carolina man was rescued from the surf at Lumahai Beach on the North Shore yesterday around 3 p.m.
County spokesperson Mary Daubert said bystander Nikona Ghiglari observed the West Cola, S.C. man in distress, and retrieved a recently installed rescue tube and swam out to assist the struggling man. Craig Touchton was brought ashore by the Good Samaritan and Hanalei lifeguards responding on JetSkis.
Touchton was responsive on the beach, but was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital as a precaution, Daubert said.
Rescue tubes have been placed around the island at various beaches in an attempt to reduce drownings on the island. The most recent batch was installed just last month.
The surf is forecasted to rise on the North Shore over the weekend and swimmers are urged to use extreme caution and to swim only at guarded beaches.
