Get on the bus

They’re doing this to save gas, said Dawn Wooten, program coordinator for the Rural Development Project.
Eight candidates for the Commercial Drivers License C class are poised to become the first graduates of the CDL bus drivers program.
Included in the field of eight candidates are four employees of Kaua‘i Nursery & Landscaping.
“KNL will be using a bus to ferry its employees to large projects in an effort at reducing the number of cars on the road as well as saving gas,” Wooten said.
Kaimi Nabeshima, one of the four KNL candidates, said they have one bus and have more than one driver because they need to have people ready to drive in the event the other drivers are not available.
Wooten said the class, which will start with its road testing today, is a collaborative effort involving several groups including the County of Kaua‘i, Workforce Development, and the Office of Continuing Education and Training at Kaua‘i Community College.
“The Kaua‘i Bus donated a bus to OCET for use in this program as well as to provide transportation for OCET’s international students,” Wooten said.
The bus was brought up to standard by an automotive company with the KCC Automotive Department working on other components of the bus which is housed at the KCC campus.
Colleen Tuckner of OCET said, under the new CDL-C Drivers Training program, students work through getting the proper documentation to apply for a CDL-C driver’s license.
This is the groundwork for the course which covers the basic operation of a 16-passenger bus, passenger safety, driver safety, vehicle safety inspection, hazardous materials, transporting passengers and cargo and Federal and State CDL rules.
“What you think you know, you don’t know, yet,” Nabeshima said. “It’s amazing what you learn when you get on the bus.”
Leona Workman, the sole female candidate, agreed, noting that she took the course in hopes of working at a hotel, rent-a-car business, or a company which would get her more involved with the visitor industry.
“I really liked the course,” Workman said. “I got a little nervous when they started talking about the parts and the underneath of the bus, but I could work through that.”
Steven Carvalho, no stranger to teaching the CDL Type A and B driver’s training, said the students were really good.
“They should all pass their road test,” Carvalho said. “I have no doubt in my mind.”
Candidates who will be doing their road testing include Workman, Nabeshima, Titus Kanehe, David Manu, Garry Russell, Gilbert Scott Jr., Gary Simao and Sione Ulukau.
