Laurie Claytor-Denton
Laurie Claytor-Denton, born Jan. 23, 1959 in Wailuku, Maui, died Dec. 2, 2007, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
She is survived by husband Kennie Denton, daughter Lauren, son Makana, mother Lorraine Claytor of Maui, sister Leslie Claytor-True of California and brother Gary Claytor of California.
Laurie attended Kaua‘i High School and graduated from Mid-Pac in O‘ahu. She attended Hamlin University in Minnesota and in 1998 graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in creative writing.
Laurie taught preschool, volunteered at grade school, coached soccer, was an avid photographer and writer.
Laurie swam competitively at Mid-Pac, Hamlin University, and in open ocean swims. 2007 was a highly successful year in swimming even while battling cancer. She dreamed of an island-wide swim program for the youth of Kaua‘i and volunteered with Swim Kaua‘i for youth and master swimmers.
Laurie was introduced to outrigger paddling while at Mid-Pac. She began paddling on Kaua‘i in 1980 with the Koloa Canoe Club and has paddled recreationally and competitively ever since. She joined the Kaiola Canoe Club in the early ’90s. During these years, she completed many Molokai crossings and countless other races. She consistently brought new techniques for training, nutrition, and equipment to the groups and was a vocal spokesperson for paddling, always on the forefront of the sport. Laurie has been involved with individual craft racing of canoes and kayaks since the early days here in Hawai‘i, contributing to its growth and development, having many successful channel crossings.
The family wishes to express gratitude for the care and comfort provided by the staff at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, and those close to the family who supported and helped Laurie.
Services will be announced later. Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted her family with arrangements.
Kazuyuki Kudo
Kazuyuki Kudo, 83, of Hilo, died on Nov. 28, 2007, at St. Francis Hospital in Honolulu. He was born in Moaula, Hawai‘i, on March 29, 1924. He was a welder’s foreman for James W. Glover Construction Co. Limited.
He was a member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin, a Veteran of Cannon Co. 442nd Infantry Regiment, DAV Chapter 6, and Hawai‘i Shima Kumamoto Doshikai.
He is survived by his wife Mitsue Kudo of Hilo; sons Wallace (Lynn) Kudo of Lihu‘e and Rance Kudo, Newbury Park, Calif.; daughter Ivy (John Cruz) Kudo, Baltimore, Md.; brother Kenneth (Hope) Kudo of Kaneohe; two grandsons.
Private services were held.
Arrangements were handled by Borthwick Hawaii Funeral Home.
Roberta Morris
Roberta Shirley Morris of Lawa‘i died on Dec. 2, 2007, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 72.
She was born on Sept. 3, 1935, in Kukuila.
She is survived by sisters Lillian (Bill) Cramer and Constance “Connie” (Reuben) Ramkissoon; brother John Phillip Morris; numerous nieces, nephew and cousins.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at Kauai Memorial Gardens with visitation with the family at 10 a.m. and services beginning at 11.

Sean Kawika Hoe
Sean Kawika Hoe, of Kapa‘a died Dec. 1, 2007, at the age of 37,
Born February 4, 1970, in Frederick, Md., during his father’s service in the Army, he is survived by his parents, Raymond E. and Sherry Hoe of Lihu‘e; sisters Schylar (Peter) Frederick of Flagstaff, Ariz., Chara Hoe (Nadine Naumu) of Wailua; grandparents Ray H Maas of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Ruby Maas of Hanapepe, and Raymond K.M. and Katherine Hoe of Lawa‘i; uncles Allen K (Adele) Hoe of O‘ahu and David K Hoe of O‘ahu, and cousins Nakoa Hoe of O‘ahu; and Ninoa Hoe, who preceded him in death. Sean attended ‘Oma‘o and Kahili Adventist School and graduated from ‘Iolani School on O‘ahu. Sean attended Walla Walla College in Washington and was finishing his studies at the University of Hawai‘i, Kaua‘i campus, in pursuit of a degree in psychology. He wanted to help those struggling with addiction. Sean will be remembered for his winning smile, and his curiosity of nature.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Dec. 16, 4:30 p.m. at the Kapa‘a Seventh-Day Adventist Church. The family asks that flowers be omitted.
Eleanor Carvalho
Eleanor Leina’ala Carvalho of Kapa‘a died Dec. 6, 2007, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 71.
Born in Lihu‘e on Nov. 3, 1936, she was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband Stanley M. Carvalho; sons Darryl Kaina Carvalho, Duane Kaleo Carvalho, Destry Kalama (Shaylene) Iseri-Carvalho and Dawson Kaili (Trisha) Carvalho, all of Kapa‘a, and Mitch (Trisha) Fanning of Reno, Nev.; grandchildren La‘akea and DeShayne’e Iseri-Carvalho, Kaison Carvalho and Kainani Inanod, Elijah and Gabriel Fanning; brothers Stanley M. (Espy) Oana Jr. of Hanama‘ulu, Rossiter K. (Vicki) Oana of Vancouver, Wash.; sister Flora (John) Ornellas of Anahola; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family from 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Lihu‘e First Church. Services will begin at 12:30. Burial will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens.

Yuso Ishida
Yuso Ishida of Honolulu, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died Nov. 16, 2007, at the age of 87.
Born in ‘Ele‘ele to Wakichi and Takeyo Ishida, Yuso was a longtime resident of Hanapepe Heights and worked for more than 25 years in Hanapepe as a lumber yard superintendent with Amfac Corp. An avid fisherman, he could be found most days hooking papio near Burns Field or at Salt Pond Beach Park. Yuso was an active member of his church and community, and will be remembered by all who knew him for his warm spirit and unassuming nature, his devotion to family, and for his humor, kindness and generosity. He was loved dearly and will be remembered always.
Yuso is survived by wife Lillian; children Sandra (Bob) Fuller, Warren (Ruth) Ishida, and Karen (Arnold) Mukai; grandchildren Joanna and Mark Fuller (Marjorie); Meredith, Matthew, and Bryan Ishida; and Richard Mukai. He is also survived by his sister, Hatsumi Okamoto.
Private services were held Dec. 3, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in ‘Ele‘ele and at Salt Pond Beach Park in Hanapepe.
