Warrior football mania hits Kaua‘i hard - KCC bookstore has waiting list for some items

Things are going to get more frenzied before it settles down, said Jolynne Uyesono, manager for the Kaua‘i Community College bookstore.

“We don’t know what the design is, we don’t know what colors are coming,” Uyesono said of a shipment they expect some time this week. “All we know is they’re (Manoa) shipping us something, and we should have some BCS shirts in there.”

But those shirts are already spoken for, as Uyesono said there are waiting lists for Hawai‘i logowear.

“It started getting crazy about two or three weeks ago, and after Hawai‘i beat Boise for the Western Athletic Conference championship, it got nuts,” she said. “We even had Boise parents in here buying Hawai‘i clothes.”

The WAC championship shirts have been in short supply and heavy demand, Uyesono said. The Rainbowtique Web site has gotten so many hits, they are having a hard time filling just those orders, she said.

Following Saturday’s final-minute victory which ensured Hawai‘i’s appearance in a BCS Bowl Game, Uyesono said it’s gotten even more crazy.

“People have been putting themselves on lists without even knowing what the shirts look like,” she said. “We don’t want them to call because we don’t have any. All we know is Manoa will be sending us something, when they get around to it.”

Following Saturday’s win over the Washington Huskies, Uyesono said they got some parents from LSU who came in for some Hawai‘i clothes.

“They were planning on going to the Sugar Bowl, but with the Saturday results and the BCS announcements Sunday, they’ve had to change their plans,” Uyesono said.

“But they’re happy for Hawai‘i and said the Sugar Bowl is one of the better bowl games to be participating in. Everyone waves tiny packets of sugar.”

She said things are pretty hectic in Manoa right now.

“They don’t even have the BCS shirt posted on the Rainbowtique Web site yet,” she said. “There’re no more black shirts for them to print on. It’s just crazy.”

Over at JJ’s Broiler, the source for June Jones Foundation logowear, things have been hectic and frenzied as well.

“We were packed Saturday night,” said Diana Carinio, the Anchor Cove restaurant manager. “I didn’t get home until after midnight.”

The staff at JJ’s Broiler are anticipating the arrival of University of Hawai‘i head coach June Jones this Sunday.

Jones, who will be on an autograph tour to sign copies of Hawai‘i Warrior Football, is scheduled for appearances at Borders Books and Music and JJ’s.

Jaselyn Aki, one of JJ’s waitresses, already has her WAC shirt, as does Carinio, who plans to get Jones’ autograph.

Aki said she was fortunate because she was at the KCC bookstore Friday when a shipment came in, and managed to get the WAC championship shirts.

Carinio said if the Sugar Bowl is telecast, JJ’s will have all of its seven TV sets tuned to the game on Jan. 1, 2008.
