Emergency personnel evacuated by helicopter an injured female hiker from the Na Pali Coast Trail to Princeville Airport yesterday afternoon. From Princeville, she was then taken by ambulance to Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
She suffered a broken ankle, Kaua‘i County spokeswoman Mary Daubert said.
According to Kaua‘i Fire Department officials, the 37-year-old woman from Austin, Texas, was hiking along the Kalalau Trail when she slipped and fell and broke her ankle about a half mile from Kalalau Falls.
A friend of the woman hiked out of the valley and notified police dispatch of the incident at 1:35 p.m. from a phone located near the trailhead.
An Inter-Island helicopter and three rescue specialists from the Lihu‘e fire station responded to the call. They arrived in the valley shortly after 2 p.m., treated the woman on scene and airlifted her to Princeville Airport. The awaiting medics then transported her to Wilcox Hospital at around 3:30 p.m.
Her name was not released.
