Legislators tour Ka Loko Dam
by Lester Chang - THE GARDEN ISLAND
State Reps. James Tokioka, D-Lihu‘e, Koloa, and Hermina Morita, D-Hanalei, Anahola, Kealia, Kapa‘a, Waipouli, will join House judiciary leaders on a helicopter tour over the Ka Loko Dam in Kilauea today.
Following the flight, the legislators are scheduled to hold hearings on two bills, one of which is to promote dam safety.
Rep. Tommy Waters, D-Lanikai, Waimanalo, who heads the House Judiciary Committee, some members of that committee and the two Kaua‘i legislators will tour the dam, which breached last March, sending millions of gallons of water downstream and killing seven people.
Rep. Roland Sagum, D-Ni‘ihau, Lehua, Koloa, Waimea, will not go on the flight, but will attend the hearings.
The legislators will hold two bill hearings beginning at 4 p.m. at the Kaua‘i Community College, according to a news release.
The first bill proposes to implement certain recommendations of a civil investigative report prepared for the Department of Attorney General on the dam breach.
The bill proposes to create a program to monitor and enforce rules to ensure the safety of hundreds of dams and reservoirs in Hawai‘i.
The second bill proposes to make permanent temporary liability protection for county water safety officers and the counties and states for beach parks used by the public.
