KAPA‘A — The Waimea JV boys basketball team, after being mauled by both Kapa‘a and Kaua‘i, came up with their strongest performance Friday.

The Menehune got 5 points from Xavier Guirao and 4 points each from Javin Balisacan, Malcolm Carter and Bransen Agu to outscore Kapa‘a 21-15 in the final period at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a.

It was a strong finish to a game otherwise dominated by Kapa‘a.

The Warriors won 62-49, methodically slowing the tempo and playing ball control in the final period.

Kaleo Cummings sizzled the twine with a game-high 18 points to lead Kapa‘a, including a pair from beyond the three-point arc in the third period and a 6-of-8 showing at the charity stripe.

Cody Abigania and Thomas Gausepohl, finishing with 15 and 13 points, respectively, rounded out the Kapa‘a double-digit scoring.

Kekoa Colipano finished with 8 points and Stephen Greenleaf added 5 points for Kapa‘a.

Carter finished with a team-high 16 points to lead Waimea. Siasau Matagiese added 6 points and a lot of hustle in the paint, and Sean Inouye chipped in 5. Dayton Bayot, Balisacan and Agu each finished with 4 points.

Waimea hosts Kaua‘i Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Tamakasuga keeps

sole lead in sumo

TOKYO — Underdog Tamakasuga extended his unbeaten record Saturday to stay one win clear of grand champion Asashoryu as the rivals headed into the second week of the New Year Grand Sumo.

The Mongolian champ rose to 6-1 after arm-throwing fellow countryman Ama, a No. 4 maegashira, flying to the dirt for a third loss against four victories.

Tamakasuga, 11th-ranked maegashira, showered Tosanoumi with a series of hand slaps and pulled him down for a perfect 7-0 record. Tosanoumi, a No. 16 maegashira, fell to 2-5.

Asashoryu is gunning for his 20th Emperor’s Cup, seeking to become only the fifth wrestler in the history of Japan’s ancient sport.

In other major bouts Saturday, Bulgarian ozeki Kotooshu squashed top-maegashira Dejima 2-5 at the ringside, improving to 5-2. Dejima fell to 2-5.

Mongolian ozeki Hakuho suffered his third loss against four victories as he was spun around and pushed out by his countryman Tokitenku, a No. 2 maegashira, who rose to 3-4.

Surging komusubi Kisenosato wrapped both arms around his Russian rival, Roho, dragging him out to improve to 3-4. Roho fell to an unimpressive 1-6.
