Byron Say runs afoul of the law again
by Ford Gunter - THE GARDEN ISLAND
The search for Byron Say has been escalated after the North Shore resident led police on a high-speed chase and then escaped on foot Tuesday night in Hanalei.
According to county spokeswoman Mary Daubert, Say, “already wanted for numerous offenses,” was spotted on a moped at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night by police officers on Weke Road near Black Pot Beach Park.
“Police gave chase when they spotted him,” Daubert said yesterday. “He accelerated all the way to the other end, where he dumped the moped and jumped in the bushes and fled on foot. It was dark so he eluded police.”
Residents of Aku Road in Hanalei reported numerous police officers and members of KPD’s Special Services Tactical Team in the area, as well as a gun shot some time around 10 p.m. Those reports were unconfirmed by KPD.
For Say, it’s the latest in a long list of offenses.
He is perhaps best known for a June 2005 incident in which he was driving a rental car on Kuhio Highway near Hanalei when he rear-ended a motorcycle, caused it to crash, ran over the passenger and fled the scene.
The motorcycle was driven by Steve Wheeler.
His passenger, Lisa Wilson, suffered serious injuries in the accident.
Say, then 37, fled on foot into taro fields and was later apprehended.
A lawsuit filed by Wilson stated she suffered severe injuries to the head, chest, ribs, lungs, spleen, shoulders, knees and back.
In August of last year, 5th Circuit Judge Kathleen Watanabe dismissed two of the four charges against Say stemming from the incident — first-degree negligent injury and accidental death or serious injury.
The other two counts — third degree possession of a dangerous drug and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia — still stand.
Say and his sister-in-law, Aquila Say, 31 at the time, were also arrested in May of last year for a weapons charge and drug trafficking after officers found methamphetamine, marijuana and morphine sulfates in their vehicle after a traffic stop for reckless driving near Moloa‘a.
Say reportedly fled the scene of that as well, but was later apprehended at the northern end of Kapa‘a.
