Mediterranean Gourmet rated best new restaurant on Kaua‘i
by THE GARDEN ISLAND
Honolulu Magazine rated Ha‘ena’s Mediterranean Gourmet the “Best New Restaurant on Kaua‘i” in its 2007 Hale ‘Aina Awards.
The Mediterranean Gourmet, which opened in June at the Hanalei Colony resort, features traditional Mediterranean dishes and island cuisine with a Mediterranean twist. The restaurant is situated in the oceanfront facility originally known as Charo’s Restaurant.
Mediterranean Gourmet is operated by husband-and-wife team Imad and Yarrow Beydoun.
Imad is of Lebanese ancestry and was born and raised in Beirut. Last year, Imad and Yarrow — who has family on Kaua‘i — moved to the North Shore, and Imad quickly gained a following for his homemade hummus, sold at local farmers markets.
Imad’s packaged products, including hummus, babaganush, falafels and tabouleh, are still available on Kaua‘i under the Mediterranean Gourmet label at the Papaya’s health food stores in Kapa‘a and Hanalei, Kilauea General Store and the Saturday and Tuesday Hanalei farmer’s markets.
Having recently received its liquor license, the restaurant now offers a full bar and wine list.
The menu features fresh, traditional preparations of Middle Eastern cuisine including such popular standards as stuffed grape leaves, hand-rolled fatayer, hummus, babaganush, grilled kafta, tabouleh and Greek salads, wraps of gyro, falafel or garlic chicken and various kabobs.
The menu also offers such familiar dishes as chicken quesadillas, Caesar salad, rack of lamb, New York strip and fresh fish entrees.
Creative dinner specials are offered each evening, and diners can complete their meal with such treats as island-made cheesecakes, Imad’s homemade baklava and a cup of Turkish coffee or French press tea.
Picnic lunches are also available for those heading out for a day at the beach, hiking the North Shore or exploring the island.
Mediterranean Gourmet also offers off-site catering and a 3,000-square-foot dining area for special events.
Mediterranean Gourmet is open Monday through Saturday, serving from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
A bellydancer provides entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. The restaurant is closed on Sundays.
Special prices are offered during Happy Hour from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., and a 15 percent kama‘aina discount is available.
