Falko Partners steps up to help endangered monk seals

Dr. Mimi Olry, Kaua‘i coordinator for the Hawaiian monk seal project, said Larry Bowman has always been a friend of the endangered mammal.
On Tuesday morning, Bowman demonstrated just how good a friend he is. Yesterday his company, Falko Partners, delivered a new Toyota Tacoma pickup to Orly at Valley House to help her work with the Hawaiian monk seal.
“Larry Bowman actively supports the Hawaiian monk seal conservation efforts,” Olry said. “And the donation of this truck to the state’s Division of Aquatic Resources further helps with the monk seal program.”
Olry said Bowman’s company employs a conservation officer, Marie Skello, to help oversee Falko Partners’ properties that are home to Hawaiian monk seals and nesting albatrosses.
“There have been births of seal pups on Falko properties, but with Marie there, I don’t have to worry as much because she does a good job of monitoring the mother and pups,” Olry said.
Part of Skello’s responsibilities to the preservation of the wildlife on the Falko properties is keeping birthing seals safe from dogs. Additionally, she said a growing population of feral cats and a rat problem keeps her occupied while monitoring nesting albatrosses.
“Falko Partners has partnered with the state and federal government on other various species protection projects,” Shawn Smith of Falko Partners said in a press release. “When Falko Partners learned that Dr. Olry was in need of a new vehicle to perform her job, we stepped in to assist with the help of Kaua‘i Toyota.”
Smith said Skello holds a biology degree and has both a personal and professional interest in conservation. She moved to Kaua‘i to contribute to the preservation of Hawai‘i’s unique species and feels privileged to represent Falko Partners in their conservation efforts.
Earlier in the year, Olry had to rely on the aging 1992 GMC Sierra pickup to keep tabs on a Hawaiian monk seal pup that was born at Po‘ipu Beach Park. But it was obvious then that the truck was rapidly reaching the end of the road, so to speak.
“We’ve had brake problems several times, and I wasn’t going to use it anymore,” Olry said. “It was getting dangerous to drive.”
Olry said the truck was passed down to the Aquatic Resources division from the DOCARE division and served her predecessor well.
“This truck has a radio that works,” Olry said of her new Tacoma four-wheel drive pickup. “And it also has air conditioning.”
