When one thinks of going to church, the last thing on his or her mind would probably be wrestling, but not for the Waimea Baptist Church, which sponsors the newly organized Westside Wrestling Club.
"We're just trying to provide youths and adults on the west and south sides with an anti-drug and alcohol-free type of program that promotes healthy lifestyles in exercise and wrestling in our communities," program director Ray Pigott said.
Westside Wrestling is a U.S.A. Wrestling charter club with two practice sites.
The home base is at the Waimea Baptist Church and the second site is at the Kaua‘i Christian Fellowship in Koloa.
"Westside Wrestling is teaching and practicing basic amateur skills and preparing wrestlers for competition in USAW-sanctioned tournaments," Pigott said.
Wrestlers of all ages, skill levels, and both genders are welcomed to participate.
In addition, wrestlers are currently training for contests in the Aloha State Games on June 25 on O‘ahu.
But Kaua‘i youths and adults might get the chance to wrestle in front of their families.
"We are tentatively planning a USAW sanctioned tournament in West Kaua‘i in late July," Pigott mentioned.
Practices are from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays at the Kaua‘i Christian Fellowship in Koloa, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays at KCF, and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Waimea Baptist Church.
