Amanda Wilson takes Medalist by three strokes

For the first time in history, the United States Golf Association is conducting both local and sectional qualifiers for the Women's U.S. Open in the State of Hawai‘i.

On May 25, a record of 30 women hit the links for the six spots advancing on to the sectional. The top six will compete in the 36 hole sectional next month on June 15 also being held at Ko Olina Golf Club.

Also advancing were Chie Yoshida of Japan, Kira Ann Murashige from Hilo, Camie Hoshino from Hilo, Ko-Chen Yeh from Taiwan and Julie Miyagi from Honolulu took the last spot in a sudden-death play-off.

Kaua‘i's top finisher was Lehua Wise, who shot a 78. Miki Ueoka followed close behind with an 80 and Jennie Pleas had a rough time on the course by shooting an 88.

High winds led to high scores and a very challenging afternoon on a very tough lay-out playing over 6400 yards.

The U.S. Women's Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA. The US Women's Open Championship will be played from July 1-4 at the Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, Mass.

For complete results, see page B2.
