Chance 'em: TGI carrier Morris trying for $1 billion win

This summer millions of Pepsi drinkers nationwide vied for a chance to win $1 billion. Mel Morris of Kalaheo is one of the 1000 or so entrants selected, and he's on his way to Orlando, Fla. next weekend on an all-expenses-paid trip to be part of a live national television broadcast.

Morris found a winning number in the cap to his Pepsi bottle, entered the number on a special Web site and was later notified he won a trip to Florida to compete in the "Pepsi Play for a Billion" TV special. The show is being hosted by comedian Drew Carey. Morris will be joined by four other Hawai�i winners in Orlando. Through a drawing, a small number of the winners in the audience will come up on stage. The grand finalist will be guaranteed a win of $1 million, with a chance at winning $1 billion. Other featured contests during the show involve giveaways of a vacation home, a new car and a trip around the world.

Morris said pre-broadcast information sent to him shows the odds are slim that the billion dollars will be won. Even so, Morris, who delivers bundles of The Garden Island to the Westside each night, is enthusiastic about winning an expense-paid trip to faraway Florida. Warner Bros. is airing the show on Sunday, Sept. 14.

It was questioned by the Board that City Budget and Fiscal Services Director was the acting Mayor and Bennett confirmed this because the Mayor was on a tour of Okinawa and South Korea and Managing Director Wayne Hashiro was away on a trip to Japan. By 10:30 a.m., a signed Declaration of Emergency was sent to Washington D.C. to enable FEMA to come in and provide emergency funding.
