Kapa�a man critical after one-truck crash

There were minor injuries as the result of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Rice Street and Kapule Highway in Lihu�e yesterday.

A 22-year-old Kapa�a man was injured Monday morning in a one-vehicle crash in Princeville. He was in critical condition at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.

The incident was reported to police by an anonymous caller at about 5:25 a.m., who said he heard a vehicle crash on Ka Haku Road.

According to the initial Kauai Police Department investigation, the man was traveling west on Ka Haku Road in a red Chevy pickup when the truck ran off the roadway and into the end of a guardrail, just past the Ka Eo Kai condominiums. The guardrail punctured through to the cab of the truck.

Police said alcohol and speed are not being considered as factors in the crash.

A visitor was treated at Wilcox following an unrelated, two-auto crash Monday about 2:45 p.m. at the Kapule Highway and Rice Street intersection in Lihu�e.

KPD officers Clyde Caires and Daniel Oliveira responded to the mishap. A light-blue Toyota Echo rental vehicle carrying two women, both visitors to Kaua�i, was headed to make a left turn onto Kapule Highway from Rice Street when it hit a Lihu�e-bound Saab.

The Toyota, carrying two female passengers, sustained damages to the right side. The Saab's front end was smashed in. The passenger of the Toyota was rushed to Wilcox, where she was treated for undisclosed injuries.

The driver of the Saab said she was relocating to Kaua�i from Maui, and was driving into Lihu�e to inquire about locations of local government offices shortly after retrieving her vehicle from Young Brothers.
