Ramos, Baris awarded three awards each at Filipino council scholarship luncheon


Going away to college, from the University of Northern Colorado to Kauai Community College, are high-school graduates who are recipients of scholarships of varying amounts from various Filipino organizations on the island. They posed after an awards luncheon at the Kauai Coconut Beach Resort in Waipouli.

WAIPOULI -- Cleoflins Ramos, a Waimea High School graduate, and Bradford Baris, a Kauai High School graduate, each won three awards at the recent Kauai Filipino Community Council (KFCC) scholarship luncheon.

Ramos won awards from the KFCC, Kauai Filipino Women's Club and St. Theresa Filipino Catholic Club. The daughter of Feliciano and Juanita Ramos of Kekaha is off to Washington State University, where her major is pre-med.

Baris, son of Benny and Josie Baris of Hanama‘ulu, will major in computer science at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He won cash scholarships from KFCC, the Kauai Pangasinan Association and Immaculate Conception Filipino Catholic Club.

Also receiving KFCC awards, handed out by outgoing President Angel Acorda, were Raysha Sadang, Nelly Villanueva, K'Ley Legaspi, Natalie Capino and Troy Henry.


Sadang, daughter of Renee Sadang of Kapa‘a, is a graduate of Kapaa High School who will be majoring in chemistry at Pacific University. She also won a cash award from the Kauai Filipino Women's Club.

Villanueva, daughter of Nelson and Lydia Villanueva, is a Kapaa High School graduate attending the University of Oregon and studying pre-med.

Legaspi, daughter of Julia Legaspi, is a Kauai High School graduate off to UH-Manoa to study business administration. She also won an award from the Kauai Filipino Women's Club.

Capino, daughter of Virgilio and Nelly Capino of Kekaha, is a Waimea High School graduate off to the University of Northern Colorado to study music. She also received a scholarship from the St. Theresa Filipino Catholic Club.

Henry, son of Gene and Arlene Henry, is a Kauai High School graduate who will attend KCC and major in liberal arts, with an eye on a degree in medicine.

Other young scholars who received more than one award at the luncheon included Shaun Pena, Brandi Texeira and Aric Acorda.


Pena, son of Orlando and Norma Pena, received awards from the Paoay-Curimao Association of Kauai and the Immaculate Conception Filipino Catholic Club. A Kauai High School graduate, he will attend KCC and study automotive mechanics.

Texeira, daughter of Robert and Caroline Texeira, is a graduate of Kauai High School who will major in journalism at New Mexico State University. She won awards from the Paoay-Curimao Association of Kauai and Immaculate Conception Filipino Catholic Club.

Aric Acorda, a Kauai High School graduate and the son of Angel and Nancy Acorda of Wailua Homesteads, will attend UH-Hilo, majoring in computer science. He received awards from the Laoag-Saranay Community Association and Immaculate Conception Filipino Catholic Club.

Soliman Lazo, a graduate of Kauai High School and son of Felix and Nenita Lazo of Wailua Homesteads, received an award from the Laoag-Saranay Community Association. He will attend Kapiolani Community College, majoring in computer technology.

Kevin Mercado, a Kauai High School graduate who will attend KCC and major in medical technology, received an award from the Paoay-Curimao Association of Kauai.

Tiana Nunes, a Kauai High School graduate and the daughter of Kenneth and Liz Nunes, will attend the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, majoring in hotel management. She received a cash award from the Immaculate Conception Filipino Catholic Club.

Receiving awards from the St. Catherine Filipino Catholic Club were Harvey Basug, Erwin Garcia, Clesson Higashi and Belmar Sotelo.

Basug, a Kauai High School graduate and son of Martin and Dahlia Basug of Kapa‘a, will attend KCC, studying massage therapy. Garcia, a Kapaa High School graduate and son of Ely and Nally Garcia, will also attend KCC, studying liberal arts.

Higashi, a Kapaa High School graduate and son of Clarence and Lilybeth Higashi of Kapa‘a, will study engineering at UH-Manoa. Sotelo, a Kapaa High School graduate and son of Darling and Mary Sotelo of Kapa‘a, will attend KCC and major in business.
